     For Helen
Born to the aftermath of the blitz
Lytham 1948,
strains of ancient Viking hymns
echo life's rebuilt regret.

Touring in my feudal pram
I watched the forge of Europe die,
’till embers only shaped the dark
from hammer blows intensity.

Stolen views of flying-fish
on phosphorescent sea,
we disembark in Auckland
to a raven metal cry

'Das flieger!'
'Das flieger!'

Nelson 1951, rain soaked night
of Autumn,
a woman murmurs,
her scalpel cut surrendered skin
sweats time's final dividend.
